Our summer school in deep learning covers hot topics for machine learning researchers.

When

July 5-6. Doors at 9:00 pm, talks from 9:30 to 18:30 (includes intermissions between talks).

Where

University of Alicante, Aulario1, room 19X, ground floor. You can get there by car (free parking), or by tramway (line 2) from the "Mercado Central" in Alicante, where you can find some hotels such as Eurostars Lucentum or NH Rambla.

Price

Non-AERFAI members: 200€.
AERFAI members: Free.
Fees include the attendance to all the lectures, coffee breaks and lunches. Since there is a limited number of attendants, priority will be given to the AERFAI senior members and students. Registration deadline is on June 28.

Antonio Torralba

Antonio Torralba

Professor, MIT

Antonio Torralba received the degree in telecommunications engineering from Telecom BCN, Spain, in 1994 and the Ph.D. degree in signal, image, and speech processing from the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, France, in 2000. From 2000 to 2005, he spent postdoctoral training at the Brain and Cognitive Science Department and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, MIT. He is now a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prof. Torralba is an Associate Editor of the International Journal in Computer Vision, and program chair for the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition conference in 2015. He received the 2008 National Science Foundation (NSF) Career award, the best student paper award at the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) in 2009, and the 2010 J. K. Aggarwal Prize from the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR).

Zornitsa Kozareva

Manager, Amazon Alexa

Dr. Zornitsa Kozareva is a Manager at Amazon leading the AWS Deep Learning group on Natural Language Processing and Dialog Systems. Before that she was a Senior Manager at Yahoo! leading the Query Processing group that powers Mobile Search and Advertisement. From 2009 to 2014, Dr. Kozareva was a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California and a Research Scientist at the Information Sciences Institute. Her research interests lie in computational linguistics with a focus on information extraction, sentiment analysis, knowledge graphs and semantics. Dr. Kozareva regularly serves as Area Chair and PC on top tier conferences such as ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, WWW among others. She organized four SemEval scientific challenges and has published over 60 research papers. Dr. Kozareva is the recipient of the John Atanasoff Award given by the President of Republic of Bulgaria in 2016 for her contributions and impact in science, education and industry; the Yahoo! Labs Excellence Award in 2014 and the RANLP Young Scientist Award in 2011.

Sujith Ravi

Staff Research Scientist, Google

Sujith Ravi is a Staff Research Scientist and Technical Lead Manager at Google. He heads Google's large scale graph-based machine learning platform that powers natural language understanding and image recognition for products used by millions of people everyday in Search, Gmail, Photos, Android, YouTube, and Allo. The machine learning technology is used to enable features such as Smart Reply that automatically suggests replies to incoming emails or chat messages in Inbox and Allo, Photos that allows you to search for anything from “hugs” to “dogs” with the latest image recognition system, and smart messaging directly from your Android Wear smartwatches powered by on-device machine learning. Dr. Ravi has authored over 50 scientific publications and patents in top-tier machine learning and natural language processing conferences, and his work won the ACM SIGKDD Best Research Paper Award in 2014. He organizes machine learning symposia/workshops and regularly serves as Area Chair and PC of top tier ML and NLP conferences including NIPS, ICML, ACL, COLING, KDD, and WSDM.

Associate Professor, UPV / CTO, Solver Machine Learning

Dr. Roberto Paredes joined in 2000 the Computer Science Department of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), where he is until now serving as an Associate Professor. His current fields of interest include Statistical Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning, Biometrics, Large-scale problems, Multimedia Retrieval and Relevance Feedback. Dr. Paredes is the head of the PRHTL Research Centre and former President of the Spanish AERFAI Association. Moreover he is now the CTO and Co-founder of Solver Machine Learning, a spin-off of the UPV. Dr. Paredes has authored more than 80 scientific publications some of them in top journals (IEEE PAMI) and conferences (CVPR). In 2003 he won the award to the “Best Performing Face Verification Algorithm (Automatic Registration)” at AVBPA conference. Some of his face verification algorithms have been acquired by private enterprises. Nowadays he is focused mainly in Deep Learning techniques and some of his DL solutions are applied to different sectors where Solver Machine Learning is working on.
